the final of the kingdom derby takes place tonight in tralee and it should be a cracker being a wide open affair the bookies betting 5/2 the field any of the 6 in the line up are capable of winning it
in trap order i will give a brief synopsis of their chances
in trap 1 we have the bar one sprint winner in allmightyjack trained in limerick by james roche this son of tucks mein is usually fast away from traps but missed it last week from the one box and ran well to qualify he will really need to lead to win tonight
in trap 2 we have another fast starter in the shape of attykit admiral this fella is handled by graham holland and he is another that will have to get away well to win he was slow enough away in his semi but ran a gusty dog to finish 2nd
trap 3 houses the enigmatic fermoyle honcho this fella IS the fastest dog in the final but is "quirky" he defied the odds last week to win in 28.51 and it would be great to see a local owner win a big pot this fella is trained down in caherciveen and for fellas that don't know their geography its in the arsehole of ireland with tralee being the nearest track and that's about 100 mile round trip id love to see him win it as he has his detractors but he will have to be at his very best tonight in this quality field
trap 4 houses the steven wadsworth sole survivor compass smash and this fella is not without a chance either he picked up ballymac bull right on the line last week and will be finishing best of all he has the a clonmel track record and some smart shelbourne form on his card from earlier in the year to so he is no slouch and if this fella turns close to the pace the ones in front had better look out
in trap 5 we have the michael o donavan trained everybodysaid no this lad has yet to win a heat but he wouldn't be the first dog not to win a heat of a major competition and then go on and win the one that matters he has been running consistently but for me hes a back number
trap 6 houses another local hope with the liam dowling owned and trained ballyac bull this fella is a bit of a local favourite in tralee but the draw out in 6 is a cruel blow to his chances this fellas main weapon is his early pace and he will need to lead to win his stamina maybe a little suspect but saying that it took a real strong dog in the shape of compass smash to pick him up last week
all in all a quality final i would love to see fermoyle honcho win it for the "small man" but for a punting proposition i would have to swerve him my money tonight will be going on allmightyjack
james roches is a master at getting a dog from traps when its needed and even though the general consensus is that 1 is a bad box i think jim would be quietly smiling to him self when he heard the draw

kingdom derby semi finals
Tonight sees tralee host the two semi finals of the kingdom derby there has been a few shocks along the way as usual in this sweep and a lot of the hot pots have bitten the dust however we are still left with 12 good dogs in the semis
The first semi of the night looks on paper to be the best with with all of last weeks winners lining up;this one is definitely not one for punting in with all six in with a great chance,my personal preference would be for ballymac bull but his stamina is suspect like all ballymac maeves offspring and he will need to lead to win,one i would love to go on and see win it is evons murrali this fellas half owner died suddenly just before the q final and was in fact buried the night it was ran and it would be a poignant reminder if this fella could go on and win the final
A case really could be made for all the runners allmightyjack has great early pace in trap 1 but the trap draw could put paid to his chances,compass smash in 2 lacks early but will be finishing best of all,murralli in three can fly to the turn and if he leads it will take a good one to peg him back,ballymac bull is another who is very fast on the bunny but his stamina is suspect but again if leading will take catching;college finsceal goes from 5 and this lady defied the myth about trap 1 last week to run a binder to win and in 6 we have the mckenna trained bellmore ranger this fella impressed me greatly last week but has really got the toughest of the semi finals but i think he will be good enough to qualify
Onto the second semi final another wide open affair attakit admiral ran really well last week but has trap 1 to contend with,timothy gilbourne a man i bought a bitch off one time handles the 2 dog and has done well with him to qualify so far but this may be a step to far
Trap 3.... well what can i say about this fella there is no doubt in my mind he is by far the fastest dog left in the sweep but a look at his win to run ratio tells you a little about him if he puts his head down some night he ill do a massive run
Everybodysaid no runs from 4 this fella has been producing fast times in the earlier rounds but has yet towin a heat could tonight be the night?
In trap 5 we have compass honey this lady led last week and was picked up handy enough and for me i couldn't have her in this one
Trap 6 houses cashen zig for local owner and trainer chris houlihan and it would be great for the owner to add the kingdom derby to the achievements of winning the laurels in cork already this year and he could well run into a qualifying position but for me there is only one winner of this one in fermoyle honcho,hes dodgy but hes fast and not one for punting as i have learned to my cost there is a good class supporting card on the night sponsored by kathleen and domonic from greyhound and pet world in abbeyfeale and some quality racing is assured

compass points in the right direction
The "compass man" as he is fondly known came to tralee last night for his first visit and duly got a brilliant result with all six runners he had entered for the kingdom derby qualifying...well nearly..lol compass don dead heated for third with tasty rambler and a toss was decided on and he lost out but word on the track last night was that compass seamus who is just back from injury Will be withdrawn thus allowing compass don back into the sweep proper as first reserve
There was a good gaggle of non runners on the night which was a disappointment,pat curtins runners didn't make it down in time after getting stuck in traffic in abbeyfeale so he missed kenneling time this resulted along with other absentees in 3 five dog races and 1 four dog race which is far from ideal however the show must go on and the remaining runners did themselves proud with some top class displays
heat 1 is where last years winning trainer mossie o connor went to battle with the highly regarded kick for touch this fella has been burning up tralee track of late and was favourite to continue on his way in what looked a very tricky heat with lots of early pace anyways it didn't go to plan after a moderate enough break he clipped the rail at the first bend but was still in contention going into the third bend where he ran into the back of compass honey losing his chance the winner here was evons murrali a favourite of mine and he did it well from the front after taking a flyer he won in a quick 28.56
heat 2 riverside kid here was the jolly after an encouraging trial in clonmel but he had to give best to my neighbours dog dishwasher Dave who recorded an all the way in in a personal best of 28.65 riverside had every chance when being upsides at the third bend but faded very badly to finish 5th
heat 3 shane murphys cyclers lark was the fav here but he failed to qualify the winner here coming from trap 2 in the shape of cashen zag,compass mikey led the field a merry dance for a long way but cashen zig was closing all the time from the 3rd bend on and just got up to win on the line in 28.70
heat 4 college finsceal a full sister of college causeway came in here as a reserve and duly flew the lids to power right away and win by 7 lengths in 28.52 over a distance that would be a bit on the short side for her there was some trouble in behind but his was a fine run all the same from this lady who usually is not noted for her early pace
heat 5 a 4 runner affair another local dog coming out on top in the shape of scart hawk he looked to have an uphill task granted though the 4 runner field did him no harm either anyways it matters little now as this lad pinged the lids and won by a fast diminishing length in 28.84 with an unlucky fermoyle honcho in 2nd
heat 6 local hope ballymac bull headed the betting here after a cpl of very promising runs around tralee and cork and it all looked rosie as he took up the lead at the first bend but the ann wade trained snowy hill was never far away from this fella and after a ding dong battle snowy hill shaded it on the line in a smart 28.58
heat 7 bar one sprint winner almightyjack looked to be the one to be on here and after a fast break he was home and hosed very early on winning in 28.57 bellmore ranger ran on to be a game 2nd
heat 8 the final heat of the night saw owen mckennas side bet a very short 4/5 with the books and rapid express a recent winner in cork looked value in my book and that was how it turned out this lad flying the lids to win in a comfortable 28.53 and completing a fine double for ann wade all in all a good nights racing but it has to be said the attendance on the night was very poor whether you can put this down to the cold night is hard to say but considering the money on offer and the quality of dogs on show its a shame it wasn't supported a little better

€100,000 Bonus For Cronin Unraced Winner
The Mike Cronin Readymix Unraced Juvenile Classic has already become the leader in its kind in Ireland and the latest development will ensure that it is one of the most sought after prizes on the Irish greyound scene. The Tralee Management announced on Tuesday that there will be a massive bonus of 100,000 Euro on offer to the winner of the 2009 Cronin Juvenile Classic if that dog goes on to win the 2009 paddypower.com Irish Greyhound Derby at Shelbourne Park.
The bonus is being sponsored by well known Tralee bookmaker Berkie Browne and add hugely to the attraction of the already extremely valuable competition. However, in contrast to other bonuses on offer in Ireland and the UK, this bonus is on offer to the trainer of the winner. The thinking behind this strange condition is obviously to attract as many entries as possible. There has been a disappointing numerical response to the competition in the first two years of its existence, but the quality has been of the highest standard. The management are obviously hoping that every leading trainer in the country will be attracted by such a bonus and the winner would be standing to win some 300,000 Euro in the Derby final - if he gets that far. There is the 25,000 Euro Cronin prize, plus the Derby winners cheque of 175,000 Euro and the bonus of 100,000 Euro. The Cronin Juvenile Classic is due to commence in early March while the Derby will run between August and mid September.

aston off to a flyer
The big one in galway got off to a flyer last Saturday night with the first round of the golden jacket taking place the highlight of the night surely had to be the return to the track of this years derby winner shelbourne aston and he did not let his supporters down coming from behind to win going away,college causeway was a late withdrawal from the competition and this will surely take some gloss of it but there are still a lot of quality dogs on show
graham holland had the fastest time of the night with his broadacres turbo flying around in a lung busting 31.10 bringing his winning tally to 16 this fella contested the final of the oran majestic unraced in galway last year and this sweep has thrown up some nice dogs and it has been a bench mark for some top dogs with the likes of tyrur kenny,caz diamond,farloe baman and florida rooster all going on to better things

saturday night card in tralee provided attractive racing for the large crowd from west limerick who came to support the chernobel childrens fund,kick for touch ran an astounding race to pick up cashen zig on the run in this was no mean feat as zig has been racing in top company and was a derby semi finalist and just go touched off in the consolation final of 08 the time was not earth shattering but the manner of the victory was very impressive and his s.p was a massive 6/4
Another notable run on the card was that of cashen legend the recent laurels winner who lined up against his only other serious threat in the race green heat the bookies where betting 6/4 the pair and the race panned out as the betting suggest with the big 2 battling out the finish cashen legend took a flyer from taps and led early with green heat away moderately he had a mountain to climb but he put his head down and was gallant in defeat but in reality he was fighting a lost cause,legend prevailed by 4 1/2 lengths in a quick time of 30.89

kick for touch on the comeback trail
Saturday night sees the return to the sand of the mossy o Connor trained kick for touch in tralee he has been off the track for the past 6 weeks or so with a slight injury,mossy is a great believer in the old saying that time is a great healer and he always gives a dog plenty of time to get back to full fitness,this lad trialled a couple of weeks back over the sprint distance in tralee and returned a very respectable 17.74 but to be fair a dog of his calibre should be doing that kind of clock he runs from the 5 box in the 8th race of the night and will be a short price to do the business but not a punting proposition in his first race back but he should win
Also on the card we have an Irish laurels and produce stakes winners competing against each other with green heat taking on cashen legend in the open 570 i have to say i was a little surprised to see these 2 on the race card as i thought for sure green heat and to a lesser extent cashen legend would be aimed at the golden jacket

mundane enough in tralee
The last 2 racing nights in tralee where nothing to write home about with fairly average grade on show however these fellas are some owners pride and joy and have to run and its hard to have good class racing every night but i think they should try and spread it around a bit more
There was a couple of nice runs however on last nights card and a double for cork based Liam o Callaghan and greyhound data forum member Anthony dwyer with roaming cruiser and roaming abbey both coming home with their head in front on the line roaming cruiser (tucks mein x lassana kitty) an august 06 whelp was having his first race so he had a bit of age on his side however none the less he did the business really well after missing his break he showed real pace to lead around the bend and win going away in a time of 18.13 there was lots of time left on the track for this one and will be winning again very soon so he is one for the notebook

€25,000 on offer tomorrow night
Big money is the order of the day tomorrow night in tralee with a benefit night In aid of the rathmore churches development fund there has been a massive effort put in by the organising committee and a massive crowd is expected
€750 is the smallest winning purse on offer and a big thank you has to go to all the sponsors who dug deep for the cause
The headline act on the card is the final of the mike cronin sponsored €14,000 Rathmore Churches Development Final worth €5500 to the winner this sweep attracted a top class entry and a smashing final looks on the cards
In trap 1 we have the neilus oconnel trained top jamella this fella caused an upset last week when flying the traps in a 3.04 split to win in 28.87 he will have to repeat this split again tonight to have any chance
Trap 2 houses the pat ferrick trained blazeaway honcho and he will be the likely favourite this fella has ran extremely well throughout the sweep and has to have a mighty chance
Trap 3 sees the first of the shane murphy trained runners in whitty john another that has been running well but will do well to beat blazeaway to the bend
The sole Kerry runner in the line up goes from trap 4 in the shape of lisa wrens ruby blooze this lady is lacking in the early stakes but comes home very strong and if there is any trouble in the race it will play right into her hands
Shane murphys 2nd finalist exor three goes from trap 5 this fella has been foot perfect so far and is the only unbeaten runner in the line up he has smashing early pace but the draw in 5 will not help his chances
Light shift goes from 6 and this lady is running out of her skin at the moment and has taken to the tralee track like a duck to water she did a flying time of 28.29 in the quarter final and a repeat of this run will be good enough she ran fierce well last week to qualify after meeting trouble early on but the trap 6 draw has done her no favours and she is one i will have to swerve

Also on the card we have the final of the Munster joinery a3 worth €2600 to the winner a very tricky contest for punting but dilton swift would be my choice in this one after a brilliant 17.58 spin a couple of weeks back over the sprint trip he looked thrown in but it didn't go according to plan in the first round however he got back on track in last weeks semi finals winning in 28.93 a trap 6 draw does him no favours but i will plump for him to a very small stake
The open 550 on the night sees green heat going to traps in what looks like a handy pick up for him but i like the look of skehard son and at a price he might be a little value to turn over the hot pot
The open 525 on the night sees the laurels consolation winner cahills bar go from trap 3 but my fancy here is for evons murrali drawn all wrong last week in six he missed his break but ran well after just failing to qualify but i think he just could be the bet of the night
All in all it should be a great night with top racing on show and the parade of cashen legend and droopys noel should top it off nicely

In trap 1 we have the neilus oconnel trained top jamella this fella caused an upset last week when flying the traps in a 3.04 split to win in 28.87 he will have to repeat this split again tonight to have any chance
Trap 2 houses the pat ferrick trained blazeaway honcho and he will be the likely favourite this fella has ran extremely well throughout the sweep and has to have a mighty chance
Trap 3 sees the first of the shane murphy trained runners in whitty john another that has been running well but will do well to beat blazeaway to the bend
The sole Kerry runner in the line up goes from trap 4 in the shape of lisa wrens ruby blooze this lady is lacking in the early stakes but comes home very strong and if there is any trouble in the race it will play right into her hands
Shane murphys 2nd finalist exor three goes from trap 5 this fella has been foot perfect so far and is the only unbeaten runner in the line up he has smashing early pace but the draw in 5 will not help his chances

no luck last night
palatine millie had no luck in tralee last night missing her break and then running wide off the first bend and running into lots of trouble for her endeavours but it will be a learning curve for her and she should be a lot more clued in for her next encounter on the plus side she has done no harm to her card

palatine millie runs tomorrow night
Stuart Welford palatine millie runs in a n3 12 dog sweep in tralee tomorrow night,palatine glen was also due to run in this sweep but has picked up a slight touch of the kennels cough so we have decided not to risk him,dineenos lad is down as a reserve tomorrow night also so he may get a run but he will be out in the next couple of weeks either way
Aughacasla Adam was entered today for his novice race in clonmel and should be out in the next 3 weeks i was originally going to run him in a novice open sweep but on reflection have decided againt it and he will be aimed at a n1 i hope to get a trial into him in the next couple of weeks around the davis road circuit

legend brings home the cash
A cracking race,a cracking result;the chris houlhan owned and trained cashen legend (pictured) ran a brilliant race to win the 2008 laurels last night in curraheen park with a massive 36,000 euro to the winner chris and his family will have some christmas
I watched the race on the intertrack in tralee and was sorry i didnt go to cork to watch it after the result
I can only imagine how chris was feeling when slip the lark,tyrur laurel and cashen legend all flashed across the line togther but i know my heart would have nearly stopped if it was me!!!
A better tonic you could not ask for for chris after the year he has had health wise and for the ballyduff man i can bet there is no better medicine that winning the 2008 laurels

Laurel to take the laurel!!
Tonight sees curraheen park host its biggest night of the year with the cashmans sponsored 2008 laurels final the headline act on the card it has turned out to be quality final with all 6 runners having a live chance on the clock it ill be the most closely contested final for years in the sponsors betting pat buckleys slip the lark is a short price favourite and deservedly so lets Have a look at the six finalists in trap order
solinus: this son of top honcho and doll face to my eye He has a real chance at a price he has great early pace and trapping ability and the inside draw is certain to suit if he can get round the first bend in front he will take some catching and it would be great to see an owner trained dog put it up to the big fellas
cabra cool: pat buckley first of 2 runners another with fine early pace and very consistent at the box's and again he has the clock done to challenge the best of them an 8/1 chance with the sponsors another that is great value he has yet to be out of the first 2 so far in the competition and can not be ruled out
chicken supper:this son of tucks mein is running out of his skin at the moment but he has a lot of running done in the past few weeks when competing in youghal and cork on consecutive nights this however has done him no harm so far but i think tonight might be a step to far for him the sponsors have him at 14/1 and this looks about right
slip the lark: pat buckleys second final list and worthy fav this flying son of the great larkhill jo looks to have a massive chance to get his first classic after being narrowly touched off in the Irish derby final by shelbourne aston its a massive achievement for buckley to keep him running at the top of his game this will be his 13th week in a row going to traps and he will be a very worthy winner if he can pull it off however his price by cashmans 11/10 is way to short in my book

cashen legend: takes the final spot and this son of ballintore brave is very consistent and his owner trainer chris houlihan has had some craic around the country with a few of this litter and is not afraid to take on the big boys and with some success it has to be said

rathmore churches semi finals
The three semis of the rathmore churches are the headline act on tonight's tralee card this sweep has turned out to be a very hot one with some serious fast times being produced
The first semi final sees my fancy evons murralli going from trap 6 but he will have his work cut out to win this one,he comes up against natural comet whom he beat last week and blazeaway apache a quarter final winner also last week in 28.46 but my idea of the winner here is natural comet i think that being on the inside of these other 2 fast breakers could be what he needs to win this one with only two to qualify from each heat tonight there is no room for mistakes but ill stick my neck out and go for a 3-6 forcast
natural comet should be a nice price and could be value in a competitive heat
The second semi final tom bamburys rusheen champ is a non runner due to injury and will be replaced by the mossie o connor trained Fealeview Razl as reserve however my idea of a winner here is the shane murphy runner exor three but it is not one i will be punting in

tyrur laurel still in the hunt
The p.j fahy owner tyrur laurel is still in the hunt for outright honours in the 2008 cashmans Irish laurels next week after a smashing performance last sat night in curraheen park i stand to win a good few quid if this fella can get his head in front on final night and in these times of recession its badly wanted!!!! He wont have it all his own way with a quality field to contend with he will have to be at the top of his game;pat buckley has 2 through to the final with slip the lark and cabra cool both making it through,the lark is the worthy fav and his early pace is a major weapon in his make up,one i like from left field is solinus this fella has great trapping ability and goes up fast and in trap 1 i think he is ideally drawn,chicken supper has drawn the three jacket and he can also go up fast and if he happens to get his head in front early on he will be hard to peg back,the Kerry owned cashen legend lines up in the six box and this son of balintore brave is a consistent sort and has been running in top class company but having a middle seed on him does him no favours when he ends up in 5 or 6 every time he runs;from his last 14 starts with a middle seed on him he has ended up in trap 5 on six occasions and trap 6 on 8 occasions

cork invasion in tralee
All we where short was the red shirts and flags!!!!
The cork crowd came down in droves last night and went home happy with 5 of the 6 heats of the rathmore dev sweep won by cork trained greyhounds and to top it off a tipperary trained dog won the 6th!!!!
fast times where the order of the day last night in tralee in the 2nd round of this hot sweep worth 5500 to the winner light shift being very impressive when flashing from traps and winning in a very very quick 28.29 this daughter of tucks mein was winning her 9th race and she has some nice form on her card but nothing to suggest she would do a clock like she did
blazeaway honcho won the 2nd heat of the night in 28.46 and like his name he "blazed" away from traps this fella ran in the 08 mike cronin unraced sweep in tralee it and has found it tough since stepping up to all age company
the third heat of the night went to exor three this shane murphy trained winner is a consistent sort and again did it from the front holding on from his other and more fancied runner whitty john
the kerry owned green rumble won the next in 28.63 this fella won a nice unraced in kilkenny but has taken a while since to get to grips with older opposition
evons murrali did the business in the next and i tipped up this fella earlier in my blog his brilliant early pace settled this one by the first bend going on to clock 28.57
the final heat of the night fell to droopys floss this daughter of yeah man was out with the washing early on but flew home to in ging away in 29.04 this lady has serious pace but often leaves her self to much to do

buckley wins the big one
pat buckley pulled off another big win for brothers mike and vincent mckenna when taking the puppy derby in harolds cross last night with droopys noel,this fella cracked out from traps and controlled the race as he liked from the front,ballymac bondi was gallant in defeat but he could not get to the winner who flew round in a fastest of the competition 28.49,a brillinat final and im sure we will be seeing lots more of these 6 in the coming months,my ante post tip timor blue got it all wrong at the start but ran on well to get up for 3rd and i will collect a few pound for my trouble

Feast of racing this weekend
We are spoiled for choice this weekend with top class racing all round the country on Friday night we have the final of the puppy derby in harolds cross and it looks to be one of the best in years with all 6 runners in with live chances,i have a few quid on timor blue ante post so i hope he wins but i really like accordello,this son of westmead hawk looks good value at 13/2 on offer by cashmans and i might have a little saver on the night,onto youghal where we have the semi finals of the prestigious diarmud coffey unraced,owen mckenna has made this his own in recent years and has a strong hand this year with the likes of blackstone bruce and lios an araig but he wont have it all his own way with stephen bourke having a few nice types still in the hunt

Aughacasla Jesse quite sensational
Aughacastla Jesse a full brother to adam that i have in the kennel this fella went to traps for his novice race last night in against a5 class and duly did the business flying around in a quiet brilliant 28.72 with a 3.09 split he wiped the floor with his rivals after taking a flyer from traps up the back he pulled the lead out to about 4 lengths but from the third bend he really put the show down pulling right away to win by 9 lengths and going further away the further he went the 550 /575 trip will be no problem to him and at his young age of only 17 months there has to be lots left in the tank there was big offers for him at the track last night but the owner has made no decision to sell as yet
