Adam and Aoife both run this weekend

After being up west for the past few weekends I'm back on home territory this Friday and Saturday with kilhoran aoife and aughcasla adam both running in tralee on Friday and Saturday night respectively i could have done with getting a couple more weeks work into aoife as she has only had 1 525 since she qualified and has missed a few gallops over the past couple of weeks due to the frost and snow and i was expecting that she wouldn't get a race for another 3 weeks but i have got the call early and she will go into her novice race slightly under prepared but we will have to take our chance she has drawn trap 1 which is never the easiest of traps and from what Ive seen of aoife in sprint trials she is more a middle runner lets hope she can avoid any early trouble and have a clean run race
Adam lines up in the 11th race Saturday night and i would really love to see this lad get his head in front he has been the brides maid quiet a few times in his career and is definitely due his winning turn...... if he traps in front he will win......i hope...lol

Luck runs out in galway

dineenos chances bit the dust last night in galway I'm afraid
i always knew it was going to be a tough heat and he well beaten in 4th place he broke pretty well and went to the bend well but took a real hefty whack here which probably cost him his chance of qualifying he was shuffled back to forth going up the back but made up a place up the back straight but pat curtins mustang dog was way to close for comfort turning for home i was still in third but my lads stride was shortening while at the same time the other fellas was lengthening...lol anyway he picked me up handy enough on the run and my chance was gone i really needed to turn without any trouble to have enough in hand of this strong stayer and it was not to be I'm afraid but it was an enjoyable experience either way one thing i have to comment on is the poor prize money for the unplaced runners its all fine and well shouting about the top prize of 10 grand but €70 for unplaced 3rd round losers is a bit of joke after paying €40 to enter you are up the princely sum of €30 for your 3 trips to galway i won my first round heat to pocket €100 for the owners but all the same its poor to say the least
Im undecided whats next for dineenos lad as there is not to much around at the moment for him but i will probably give him a spin in a one off around tralee races are scarce enough on the ground in the kingdom with me having to wait the full six weeks to the day for my last race with aughcastla adam which is not really good enough

good news man forgets me!!

i was having a quick look through the talking dogs section of the igb tonight and read a small piece on the broadway pet foods sweep he doesnt seem to give me much of a chance ..lol
and i quote
"Another boasting a three from four record is Gogetemaura, representing the Sprint Cup winning team of Larry O’Rourke and James Roche. She goes from three in the second heat and is the one to beat. However this will be an open betting affair with the likes of Burnpark Adam, Springwell Edge and Mustang Moreno also attracting support"
id have to agree with him on the first 3..... but mustang moreno??? now anything can happen in racing but in my eyes i reckon i would be in the hunt... anyways i wont be losing any sleep over it have had 10 pints and im off to bed...lol

The lad is in a tough heat again

Dineenos lad has drawn a tough heat again on Saturday next i was hoping to swerve a couple of the big guns but i have met two of last weeks quality heat winners and a good runner up in the shape of burnpark adam in the draw this week but alas it was not to be he will really need to step up to the plate to have any chance of qualifying from this one there is bundles of early pace inside me with trap2,3 and 4 all ahead of me on split times the only consolation for me is that i came from behind springwell edge in the first round to win
Trap 1 and 6 don't look to be the fastest starters so in my book it will be a race between the inside traps 2,3,4 and my own fella from trap 5 lets keep the fingers crossed that we can cross the line in one of the first 3 places to qualify for next weeks semi finals
I think it might be time for my lucky red jacket and lead...lol
Either way its nice to have got down to the final 24 but it would be great to progress another step
dineenos 2 owners Tim and Moss Dineen have yet to make the trip to galway with other commitments but i have been informed that they will both be available the night of the final...........no pressure there then..lol

Another hurdle negotiated

Well i got the job done in galway last night with dineenos lad qualifying handy enough in 2nd place the winner had flown from trap 1 and clocked a smashing time of 29.09 this run looked on the cards for this fella for quiet some time as he has gone off a short price fav in every race he has run so far i was beat a total of 5 1/2 lengths he tried hard to close and looked to be bridging the gap between the third and fourth bend but when they straighten up the winner powered away again either way i was happy I'm into the next round and that's what its all about
The stake is definitely hotting up with some smart performances from some winners with the most impressive being from jackies nikie this lady pinged the lids and at the first bend it was how far... she won by a massive 12 lengths a top class performance and she has to be now one of the ante post favs another i liked on the card was valentia rover this lad chased home james roche charge in the 4th heat of the night making up eye catching ground coming to the line
Eilishes boy and ballymac misty had contrasting fortunes eilishes boy had every chance going up the back after turning a clear second but he disappointed to finish a well beaten 5th and it looks like there maybe something amiss, ballymac misty on the other hand stuck to her task well to qualify in 2nd after some early bunching
The next round draw with 24 left in the hat will be ultra important and i will be hoping to swerve some of the heat winners but there is no doubt my lad is going to have to step up on his last 2 performances but I'm confident that if i can get him on the bunny he should do a good run

kilhoran black doing well

kilhoran black (hondo black x mineola di) is doing very well by all accounts

hes just 5 months so its early days yet and weighs in around the 42 lb mark so he doesn't look like he will turn into the biggest dog in the world but hes a long type of pup and it will probably take him sometime before he fills his frame out hes happy and loves to play and run and dare i say it......fight!!!! but pups will be pups and i like to see one that young that fights his corner I'm reckoning that if he keeps progressing he will prob be up on 70lb mark when it come time to race which is big enough for me and will do fine

on a another note it was nice to see fear zafonic do the business in the birmingham cup tonight and lets hope farloe oyster has thrown the same breeding capability's into her daughters

2nd round heats of broadway pet foods sweep

I have drawn trap 4 in the 2nd round on Saturday night with dineenos lad he is not really a middle seed but i put it on him hoping there would be one wide seed in the race and that i would get trap 5 but there was 2 wides sides in it.....lol always the way... anyways I'm not one to dwell on trap draws you take what you get and get on with it as far as I'm concerned you cant change it so why worry about a trap draw
I have drawn the first heat of the night so i will know my fate pretty quickly but with 4 to qualify i am hopeful of progressing to the next stage there looks to be a share of early inside me in 1,2 and 3 on paper it looks to me like 2 will lead followed up by trap 3 and hopefully i can turn in 3rd the one dog looks very unexposed and has gone off a short price in his 3 runs so far so connections could be expected a big run from him but the trap 1 might not suit him trap 5 and 6 look like they do there best running in the 2nd half of the race so there could be a driving finish I'm behind a couple of them on the clock but the way the track was running last week it was very hard to gauge how it was running varying so much between races if you look at covex boy in this heat he has a 29.31 galway run on his card when on the bunny a few weeks back yet only posted 30.05 when on the bunny last week so pretty hard to figure it out I'm confident there is a good bit more left in my fella and lets just hope for a clean run race
Onto the 2 other kerry runners eilishes boy and ballymac misty these have been drawn together in the final heat of the night on paper again it looks to be eilishes boy to lead up these but he had a slight niggle after last weekends run so work this week with him has been kept to a complete minimum onto the ballymac dog i know liam was pretty sweet on her chances last week so there could be a good bit in the locker by her
It would be nice to come down the road from galway next Saturday night with the same result as the previous week but im sure if he have 3 4th place finishes we will all be happy

upside down weekend

The long trip to galway payed dividends last night with dineenos lad coming out on top in his heat of the broadway pet foods a3 sweep on a dreadful night in galway the track management did there best to keep the show on the road and where in constant touch yesterday before we headed for the west to confirm that racing was going ahead
anyways we had a fruitful night in the showgrounds with 3 dogs in the van on the way up we came home with 2 winners and a second beaten a short head ...you would take that any day of the week first up was liam dowlings ballymac misty this lady led going up the back straight and looked all over a winner turning for home but just got pipped on the line to be beaten a short head next up was eilishes boy trained by my neighbour steven riordan he made the step up to 525 with ease coming from behnd to win in a comfortable 29.81 the pressure was on me now and i had to sweat it out until the 7th race for my chance the rain eased slightly just before my race so we didn't get to wet as they went to traps it looked on paper it would be a race to the bend and so it turned out with the fastest split of the night being done in my heat i turned handy enough and got around the bend without any trouble going up the back i was in third place and was just praying he could qualify but to my amazement he took up the running between the third and 4th bend and stuck out the trip pretty well its hard to know how well and a lot depends on the quality of the opposition on the night but on a track that was pretty sloppy i was delighted the way he ran the clock was pretty average but time only matters behind bars!! whats important today is that we have our hat in the ring for the next round on Saturday there was a couple of smart runs on the night with james roches charge gogetmaura winning in a quick 29.12 jacksies nikie also won well in 29.11 the times on the night where very up and down and it was hard to get a run on the track the way some of the races panned out there was lots of trouble nearly in every race and I'm sure some fellas will be cursing there luck this morning but thats dog racing and you have to take the good with the bad

oh for a win!!

2nd again tonight in tralee with aughcastla adam he met trouble everywhere... for once he broke pretty good but got in a tangle with the 2 dog just after leaving traps and lost his momentum the 2 dog ending up on the floor he then got more trouble at the first and second bend turning up the back straight he was placed in 5th but ran very gutsy after just picking off the six dog on the line for 2nd it was a dreadful night in tralee with wind and rain blowing and the track was estimated at 30 slow by the stewards its becoming pretty frustrating with this fella at the moment I'm sure there is a real good win in him some night just don't know when the wheel will turn!!
lets hope for better luck tomorrow night and if i finish second i will come down the road to kerry very happy

2 runners this weekend

Aughcastla adam and dineenos lad are both due to run this Friday and Saturday night respectivley adam in tralee and dineenos lad in galway both of them are in good shape and ready to run adam has put back on the weight he lost and may even be up a lb or so he probably is lacking a trial but it didn't work out so he will run either way he should give a good account of him self
The dog in 2 looks the fav to me his card isn't great but he has been running consistently well and seems to break well all the time but if i can get my fella out of the box's and leading at the first bend i would be confident he wont be caught the trapping is definitely his Achilles heel at the moment and if he could get that right he will run a big race
Onto galway on Saturday night where dineenos lad lines up in the first round heats of the broadway pet foods sweep he has drawn a tough enough heat on paper with most of them unexposed including a fahy runner who makes her debut al beit im sure she has been well trialled dinneenos has ended up out in trap 6 but hes fit and well and I'm hopeful of a good run he will have to be up there early on because i don't think he is a dog that will come from off the pace so fingers crossed we have a decent weekend i would like a win in tralee tomorrow night but would gladly settle for a place sat night in galway.... a win would be a bonus

Aoife and venture both requalify

Kilhoran aoife and venture both headed for tralee today to requalify them after there spell on the sidelines i had given them a couple of gallops last weeks just to blow away the cobwebs and i was delighted how both of them ran
Aoife pinged the lids in a 2 dog trial and won easily by 10 lengths in a decent 18.26 i was sure that 18.06 was called out on the public address but the text i got this reads different anyway suits me...lol
Kilhoran venture was in a 3 dog trial with 2 very experienced race dogs and to be fair he held his own for a dog only having his 3rd spin from a box he checked up a little at the first bend when he was amongst them but other that that i was very happy i actually thought he had got 2nd in his trial on the run in but turns out that he finished 3rd i would have bet money that he got up for 2nd but again the text says different..lol he finished 3rd beaten a total of 5 1/2 lengths in a quick time of 17.82 so he was clocking a very decent time of 18.20
There was no sign of cramping from the dog which i was pleased with but he has drank a good share of water this afternoon and evening but in general he is a good dog to drink from the pan so I'm not overly concerned
The real work will start with these 2 now and both will be running in approximately six weeks all going to plan
I have a kennel full of healthy greyhounds for the first time in ages and I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in with them
Aughcastla adam is due to run Friday night in tralee and I'm hopeful he will be primed enough to break his duck he has ran 4 races to date and every one of them has been won in sub 29 seconds How unlucky can you get!!!
Dineenos lad is due to contest the first round of the a3 broadway pet foods sweep in galway Saturday night and is in top form after coming out of his trial really well last Wednesday night he is ready to run a big race i hope!!

galway trial

I headed up for galway yesterday afternoon to give dineenos lad a spin around there to get him ready for the upcoming €10,000 to the winner broadway petfoods A3 sweep it was a bitterly cold night in galway and i suppose everywhere else as well for that matter and it was a credit to the track staff that trials could go ahead at all its a fair spin from here the bones of 3 hours each way but the road is pretty good for most of the journey these days which makes it that bit easier The trial went ok nothing spectacular I'm afraid but by all accounts the track was well back and for his first look you would be hopeful there would be more to come from him
The jury on his staying ability is still out on him for me and its not until your in a race you really know what you have he did cramp a little after the race which is a bit of a concern for me but with the freezing temperatures id say i wasn't the only one last night that had a dog cramp he seemed to walk it off ok after 10 to 15 Min's i will check him out tomorrow morning and i might give a run up to the vet to give him the once over if I'm in any doubt

kilhoran ace thriving

I was back to havea look at pup i have rearing over the christmas and i have to say he is in fine form kilhoran ace (ace hi rumble x farantane sinead) is the name i have on him at the moment but he is not registered yet is a grand specimin of a dog he s being reared by john hilliard in castlegregory for me as my usual rearers pat and mag where ill at the time and he is 10 months old and id say he weighing in around the 75 lb mark at the moment but has a back on him like charles atlas!! and to johns credit he has him leading and ready to go already which is a great bonus when taking in pups to a racing kennel,he has been well hunted and is chasing the live game for his life so hopefully we will have no trouble on the track either i will probably pick him up in march sometimes to get him used to the kennel set up and see where we go from there with him
He has the size and scope of a top racer lets just hope he has the legs, lungs and heart!!!

Have the cough again!!

I have the dreaded kennel cough again with kilhoran aoife and venture both suffering from it fairly badly and with aughcastla adam having a slight touch of it aoife was due to run in tralee Friday night in her novice race but it looks like i will have to pull her out now
i had her entered for a sprint in any case they put me in a 525!!
In fairness it looks a handy enough race but as i haven't schooled her over the 525 trip she would be withdrawn either way
I don't know is there any cure for this thing having tried several things including a couple of old wives tales to get rid of it but to no avail, aoife and venture are on their second dose of it this year already getting it back in early October and it is a real pain when you have a dog fit and ready to race i will have to give them all some time off and just hope for the best and pray that aoife does not come in season any time soon!!

No luck last night

Dineenos lad had no luck last night in tralee finishing second to the johnny kelly trained winner try why my fella missed the kick again and met some traffic but the winner had flown and dineenos tried hard to reel him in and was gaining with every stride but the line came in time for the winner
i was looking through the form of try why and he has a 29.08 win on his card and dineenos had 5 lengths on him at the pick up...so a promosing enough run all the same
it was a shame to be denied the three in a row but thats dog racing for you but if i can get this lad to trap some night he will do a massive run
a sprint in clonmel is next on the agenda for his lad or maybe even the long trip to dundalk or mullingar where the 400 yds would be right up his street

Dinnenos going for the hat trick!!

Dineenos lad tonight lines up in race 6 in tralee going from trap 5 he will have to be on his toes to win this one with some very smart sorts in the race but i have to say I'm feeling fairly confident that tonight could be the night that he gets his trapping right,if he does he will be hard to beat
he cant afford to give these fellas a start like he has been doing in his last 2 races as they are quality opposition with 23 wins between the 5 of them and really has to ping to win
it would be nice to make it 3 in a row and it would be a first for me in the training ranks if it comes off so fingers crossed

Adam runs flat

I have to say i was disappointed with aughcastla adams run last night in tralee failing to qualify in his heat he actually walked out of traps in a 3.39 sectional which is shocking it in itself but then took a bump on the run up to be fair he showed nice pace into the third bend and was looking like he was set to qualify in third but got a pile of trouble for his efforts and ended up finishing 4th the winning time was a quick enough one though it has to be said
He had a slight touch of cough going into the race and i was touch and go whether i would run him or not but he seems absolutely fine in the kennel this morning and is bouncing so maybe it was just one of those nights
kilhoran aoife and venture however are a different story with both of them really husky this morning and it looks like i will have to withdraw aoife from her novice race next week if it keeps up
So far dineenos lad seems to be the only dog in the kennel that is immune to it and lets hope it stays that way!!!

New purchase

I am please to announce i have just purchased a new pup in the shape of Hondo Black x Mineola Di from fellow blogger and friend Paul mcCusker it was touch and go if would get one of these seeing as the dogs in the litter where in short supply but i kept bugging Paul until he sold me one...lol and i have to say I'm delighted i did
mineola di never raced and was bought especially for breeding and is a full sister to some of the best dogs in England at the moment in the shape of ninja jamie, farloe reason and farloe mirror
she is from one of the best breeding lines in Ireland at the moment being from the famous farloe line and they are proven time and time again to throw really good dogs all through the pedigree
the hondo black cross is also proven with this line throwing the top tracker hondo dingle so all the ticks are in the right box's before we start so it cuts down the odds anyway even though it is never a guarantee we live in hope!!

Busy few days ahead

I will have a busy few days coming up with 3 of the 4 kennel runners hitting the sand in the next week or so,Aughacastla Adam is due to run Friday night in tralee in a 48 dog a2 sweep he runs from trap 4 in the 4th race of the night;he is short a couple of gallops due to the recent frost and has come up against an open class back grader in the shape of razzledazl Adam but I'm hopeful he can qualify for the next round
Full card http://www.igb.ie/upload/RACECARDS/TRL051208RACECARD.PDF
Dinnenos lad is entered for a sprint in tralee and is due to race on Saturday night
He is in really good form and although he is stepping up a couple of grades i am confident of a big run from him he goes from trap 5 in the 6th race
He is in against a couple of useful types so i will be keeping my powder dry on this occasion
full card http://www.igb.ie/upload/RACECARDS/TRL061208RACECARD.PDF
The plan for him is to run him in clonmel for his next assignment in an s1/s2 12 dog sweep starting on the 18th dec i intend to keep him sprinting a little while longer than originally planned but he will definitely be stepped up in trip come the new year
Kilhoran aoifes time will be out on the 15th dec so she will have to get a run in the next week most likely it will be next Thursday night the 11th dec she is entered in a sprint and after doing a hot enough sprint trial she will be in with some decent types for a novice company and again I'm hopeful that she can run well
The final runner in the kennel is kilhoran venture and i am taking it easy with him and gradually building up his fitness since his qualifying trial back in early November he cramped pretty badly that day so i will take it slowly with him and probably qualify him back in the new year sometime and give him a race in maybe early Feb or march

Not impressed

just seen the card for Saturday night in cork and i had aughcastla adam entered there for the a2 sweep and haven't got into it ...not impressed especially after i went Tuesday for a trial there to give him a look around the place
I had him entered in plenty time entering him on the phone and also posting up his card with a note attached about a week and a half ago
i contacted the track but have yet to receive and explanation
i still may be a reserve on the night but as of yet i have had no confirmation..... what ever happened to first come first serve as i have no doubt his card would have to have been one of the first entries
It was originally a toss up between and tralee and cork as there is an a2 starting there next Thursday but decided to go to cork as it was no back graders it now looks like i will have to race him in tralee and knowing my luck end up in a hot heat full of open class back graders!!
